Shaftesbury Plantation account book, 1885-1888.

Handwritten volume containing accounts of Shaftesbury Plantation in account with R.G. Cole and C.A.J. Sweat, and loose papers. Plantations mentioned in the volume and loose papers include Manigault [?], Shaftesbury, Cypress, Fairlawn, and Mansfield. Entries are for salaries for the overseer (Mr. Templeton) and his assistant (L. Wiggins, and later, George D. Gould), the head carpenter (Mr. Averitt), carpenters, and regular hands. Other costs are for seed rice, farm implements and their repair, food, forage, building materials, engine and mill, and other incidentals. Loose papers include a receipt for mules (1885 Feb. 4, Savannah, Georgia), a list of expenses for the sale crop (1882), a letter (1885 March 19) signed by C.A.J. Sweat which lists the carpenters' tools belonging to the plantation, and a list (1885 March 18) containing the number of acres of ditching [for irrigation] completed to date and to be completed for Shaftesbury, Mansfield, Cypress, and Fair Lawn [Fairlawn], and the price per acre.
